From the "why hasn't this ever been officially released on dvd!?!?!" file comes Mr. Boogedy (1986) and its sequel, Bride of Boogedy (1987).
Originally aired as an episode of "The Disney Sunday Movie" on ABC. It tells the continuing story of the Davis family and their encounters with an evil 300-year-old ghost in the fictional New England town of Lucifer Falls (best.town name.ever).
This was my all-time favorite Disney Sunday Movie series. It was just the right combo of little kid fright and humor. He still looks super creepy with his hooded and creepy pizza face. For whatever reason Disney never officially released it, but you can watch bootlegs of it on youtube and various other places.
I have no idea what triggered this bit of nostalgia, but a quick search on google gives me solace that i'm not the only 80's kid who feels this way.
I really love the graphics at the Vancouver Olympics. The system is quite nice and has a very artistic and layered aesthetic. An article over on Fuel Your Creativity talks about the design team and other things.
This poster has interesting colors and odd (in a good way) image balance happening. I love the bottom half a little bit more than the "contractually obligated" stuff at the top.
Well thats pretty interesting. Those odd blue lines are finally explained. My first thought was that those lines are going to make all the Sports Illustrated images from the games look really dated and kinda ugly.
The new MTV logo (at right) It kinda sorta looks like they forgot to hit the "fit to printer margins" button and some stuff got cut off. If MTV wanted to truly do something fresh and new, they'd start playing music again.
With the passing of JD Sallinger one of the biggest literary legends may be solved in the near future. Salinger a famous recluse, was rumored to have been writing secret novels that he stashed in his personal safe. It was also rumored that he has specific directions in his will to destroy all these unpublished stories upon his death. We'll see what happens. Read the full AP Obituary article here.
Stories about a possible Salinger trove have been around for a long time. In 1999, New Hampshire neighbor Jerry Burt said the author had told him years earlier that he had written at least 15 unpublished books kept locked in a safe at his home. A year earlier, author and former Salinger girlfriend Joyce Maynard had written that Salinger used to write daily and had at least two novels stored away.
Here is the teaser for my Crossroads of the World book. Its finally finished, bound and ready. While every page is great (hey i'm the designer i have to say that), I've taken the 220 pages and boiled it down to an easier to manage teaser. If you want to see the rest of the book give me a call and maybe we can arrange something!
I've redesigned my website and its up now. www.christopherkosek.com There is new work and some things that will be in my upcomming Grad Show. The Photo galleries are in the works but i'll post that in the next few weeks.
An incredibly interesting article about the rise and fall of Design Within Reach from Fast Company. I've always found this store to be a wierd anomaly. Just based on the title, you'd think an average person would be able to afford anything in there, but alas, this was not the case or meaning behind the naming.
I dunno, i still think Ikea has em beat for democratic, affordable design.
The classic comic strip character Archie is getting his own videogame, that happens to look and feel like the grand theft auto franchises. I wonder if he'll carjack people, or take over gang turf. He'll probabally still stay torn between Bettie and Veronica while he drives around Riverdale rockin out to Josie and the Pussycats and getting into highjinks with his buddies.
Super cool slide show from the New York Times. The White House released a list of 45 artworks that are on loan to the Obamas from several Washington museums. It is a big, broad selection, mostly modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures. Shown here, "I think I'll ... " by the California artist Ed Ruscha. It deals with the subject of indecision.
Its clever, its witty and its kind of a giant pain in the butt. Yes Viral marketing is the new normal. They can't just advertise something to us, they have to propose an elaborate game where the potential customer must solve a riddle of sorts in order to have the right to know what product (usually a movie) they are supposed to go buy. Having worked in marketing i'm very aware of all the subversive and non linear ways companies will use to try and sell products and I really wonder if they are effective from a cost/reward perspective.
A few years ago i loved these things. They were new and smart and clever. But now you almost expect it. You know its advertising as soon as you see it, which kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? When i see Viral or Guerilla advertising it makes me suspicious. Its like the salesman is trying too hard to get me to buy the clunker. I have to assume whatever is being sold is garbage and thats why they are getting clever. Isn't that a funny thing... the more clever and outside of the box the design gets, the more suspicious the customer is of it being completely worthless? What happened to the good ol days when 9 out of 10 doctors recommended something incredibly unhealthy to us? In advertising, a straight forward lie is better than a big elaborate round-a-bout one I suppose.
Exhibit #1
The District 9 "Bus Benches are for Humans Only". Aliens come to earth, they're treated like 2nd class citizens. we get it. The trailer for the movie isn't half bad. Why do we need the cheesy viral marketing? It makes me think the movie is complete junk and not worth seeing since they went overboard with trying to get me to see it.
Exhibit #2
"Heel" fake street art campaign for some movie (i don't really remember what it is but remember hearing it was a stinker of a movie). This one was clever at first because they kept it small and put up this "Obey Style" wheat paste posters in usual places...like the Labrea Ave corridor in LA that is Shepard Fairey's unofficial city sanctioned private art turf. Then they started getting on billboards and faux spray painting on the sides of huge office buildings and you just knew somebody was paying a lot for that "guerilla street art". They were trying so hard it made me suspicious.
Exhibit #3
LeRoy Smith Infomercial and Website. This is an elaborate multi layered campaign from Nike (?) that is running right now during sports related shows like the NBA finals and ESPN sportscenter. They produced all these fake training videos and mock ups of video games to sell us something yet unknown. Its elaborate...and they really need people to get into it.
